ALTRO MONDO is pleased to present HABAGATAN, the first exhibition by The Vismin Art Collective. The show opens on Thursday, July 5, from 6:00 - 10:00 PM at the gallery, located on the 3rd Level of Greenbelt 5, Ayala Center, Makati City.

In “Habagatan” (“from the south”), Altro Mondo serves as an avenue for regional art and cross-cultural exchange. Thirteen artists from the Visayas and Mindanao gather in this exhibition to seek common ground: to offer diversity. Here, the artists transcend geographical boundaries while paying homage to their roots.

The Vismin Art Collective consists of finalists, awardees, and winners of the recent Philippine Art Awards. The group came together as a result of the competition, spawning a collective thrust to promote art and fellow artists from their home turf. Together, the works in “Habagatan” stand not just as a sampling of what lies south of the center: they also serve as vessels for the artist’s identity and individual art practice set against his cultural milieu.

“Pleasing the Future” is a stance against disappearance. It is art with foresight: the artist’s attempt to resonate in what is yet to come. It is documentation, but also premonition. It is preservation – but these works also stand for the impermanent: of the fleeting nature of the present, of the concerns of both the artist and the world as it is, here, now, today, with one eye ever on the inevitability of how the times can change people, art, meaning, significance.

Altro Mondo debuted at The Picasso last month with an array of contemporary art pieces from the gallery’s backroom. Dubbed “In the landscape of having to repeat” after Martha Ronk’s collection of poetry, the stockroom hang will run from April 23 to June 16, 2012 at The Picasso Botique Serviced Residences, located at 119 L.P. Leviste St., Salcedo Village, Makati.

“In the landscape” marks the gallery’s tie-in with The Picasso’s Art-in-House Program. New exhibitions and art-related events will be held by Altro Mondo at The Picasso throughout the year, side-by-side with the gallery’s existing roster of shows.

Opening reception on THURSDAY, MARCH 8, from 6:00 - 10:00 pm at Altro Mondo - Arte Contemporanea, 3/F Greenbelt 5. We’re also holding an ekphratic poetry reading session with Mabi David, Nikka Osorio, Faye Cura, Daryll Delgado, and Petra Magno, who will read poems or short prose inspired by the works in the show.
